About Lake Biwa Museum

Lake Biwa is one of the oldest lakes in the world with 4 million years of history ,. Over the years, it has given birth to ( endemic ) species , that are found only in Lake Biwa in the world, and has developed a unique ecosystem. It is said that humans settled around Lake Biwa about 20,000 years ago. Ever since then, , humans have coexisted with the nature of Lake Biwa and have developed a unique local culture while receiving its blessings. However, , the relationship between people and nature has changed dramatically in the last 100 years. The environment, including Lake Biwa, is a gift from the future. Now , we must explore the coexistence between the lake and people that is appropriate for the new era, and seek to create a new culture.

Role of Lake Biwa Museum

The Lake Biwa Museum is a lifelong learning facility that widely promotes the value of Lake Biwa and , provides materials and opportunities for everyone to think about the coexistence between the lake and people. In order to fulfill this role, , the Lake Biwa Museum conducts research , collects ・ organizes ・ preservation activities , and introduces the results , through exhibitions ・ lectures ・ and observation events.

Three "basic principles" that characterize the Lake Biwa Museum

1. It is a comprehensive museum that deals with both nature and culture at the same time. It also has an aquatic exhibit of freshwater fish as part of its environmental exhibit of Lake Biwa.

2 The Museum as an Invitation to the Field

It is the visitors themselves who think about the coexistence of the lake and people. The real relationship with the environment is in your life and community. We provide exhibits and hands-on programs that will make you want to go out into the field ( ) of your daily life and community, and not just inside the museum.
3 The Museum as a Place of Exchange

As a place of lifelong self-learning, the Museum aims to be a place where the general ・ public, professionals, men and women of all ages and backgrounds, can be involved in museum activities such as exhibitions, exchange activities, research ・ and surveys, and can enjoy learning and thinking. Our goal is to create a museum that is a place where people can enjoy, learn, think, and encounter each other.
